Why Gold Price Changes Every Day in India

Gold is priced globally

India imports most of its gold, so the domestic rate starts from the international price quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). When global traders buy or sell gold, the Indian rate follows.

The dollar-rupee exchange rate

Because gold is bought in dollars, a weaker rupee makes gold costlier in India even if the global price has not moved. A stronger rupee has the opposite effect, which is why the rate can change on a day when international gold looks flat.

Import duty and GST

The government charges import duty on gold, and GST applies on sale. A change in duty in the Union Budget can move the Indian price immediately. This site adds the duty and GST to the international price to estimate the domestic rate.

Demand, interest rates and global events

Gold is seen as a safe asset. Prices often rise during economic uncertainty or when interest rates are expected to fall, and ease when interest rates rise or markets feel calm. In India, festival and wedding seasons raise demand and can add local premiums.

How to use this information

Do not try to time the market on a single day. If you are buying for a wedding or festival, track the 30-day trend on our gold rate page and consider buying in parts. Always confirm the final price with your jeweller.
